His mother Mary is mentioned by name in the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke) as well as in the Book of Acts. Her name appears in Luke about thirteen times, in Mark only once (Mark 6:30). Matthew and Luke tell us that the birth took place in Bethlehem during the reign of Herod (Matt 2:1; Luke 1:5, 2:4–6). Jesus was brought up in Nazareth (Matt 2:23, Luke 2:39). Around AD 27 Jesus withdrew into the Judean desert and was baptized by John, known as “the Baptist” in Jewish and Christian sources.
